Ledger Nano X Review: My 6 Month Test. Should You Buy One?

(Ad) I’ve been storing my crypto on a hardware wallet called the Ledger Nano X for the last six months.
Cold storage wallets like the Nano allow you to store your crypto offline and out of reach from hackers.
But is the Ledger Nano X secure to use, and should you buy one?
Carry on reading my review to find out!
What Is the Ledger Nano X?
The Nano X is a hardware wallet made by a company called Ledger.
They also make a similar but more basic and cheaper version called the Nano S.
With a hardware wallet, you store your crypto on an offline device that looks like a USB stick.
If you want to make a transaction to send or receive crypto to or from your Ledger wallet, you need to confirm it on the Nano X device, making it much more secure than other crypto wallets.
The benefits of using a hardware wallet are:
- Keeps your crypto offline and out of reach of hackers.
- Gets your crypto off exchanges and into your control.
The Nano X never exposes your private keys outside of the device.
So even if you connect it to a hacked computer, your private keys won’t be exposed, and your crypto will remain locked.
The Ledger Nano X lets you:
- Take full ownership of your crypto and keep your private keys confidential
- Secure over 1,800 coins and tokens, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and more
- Manage and grow your crypto with the Ledger Live app
- Install up to 100 apps
- Connect with your iOS or Android smartphone via Bluetooth
- Grow your assets by staking Tezos, Tron, Cosmos, Algorand, or Polkadot directly in Ledger Live, or lending your DAI, USDC, and USDT.
And it’s easy to set up and use.
Setting Up the Ledger Nano X
When you open and unbox your Nano X, you’ll find:

- 1 x Ledger Nano X
- 1 x USB cable
- 3 x Recovery sheets
- 1 x Instruction manual
- 1 x Use, care, and regulatory statement
- 1 x Ledger stickers
Setting up the Nano X is easy. The process doesn’t take long, but you should take your time to do it right.
The basic steps are:
- Create a 4-8 digit PIN
- Download and install the Ledger Live software
- Generate and write down a 24-word recovery phrase (keep this safe)
- Confirm the phrase back to the Nano X
- Pair with your mobile and start installing apps
- Then transfer your crypto to your ledger device
Here’s a quick 4-minute video that explains how to set up your Ledger Nano X device:
Using the Ledger Nano X
The Nano X is larger than the Nano S and has a folding metal cover with a premium feel.
And the screen is much larger and clearer on the X, making managing apps and reading transactions and wallet addresses much easier.
The two front-facing buttons also make navigating the X easier than the older Nano S.
Sending transactions is quick and easy because the larger screen makes signing transactions a breeze.
A vast difference between the X and the S is the built-in battery and Bluetooth connectivity on the Nano X.
The battery lasts up to 8 hours on standby and lets you use the wallet on the go.
This means you can connect the X to your mobile without having to use a USB cable every time you want to use it.
Another great feature is that the X works on iOS and Android, unlike the S, which was Android-only.
Stability
Many Nano S owners were disappointed by how slow and clunky it was to update the firmware of the older device, and Ledger has taken note.
Stability is hugely improved on the Nano X, and updating the firmware is faster now.
The Nano X is a pleasure to use, update, and manage apps with. Whereas the Nano S could be pretty laggy, the Nano X offers a quick, smooth, and stable experience at all times.
App Support
One of my favorite features of the Nano X is that it can store up to 100 apps at any given time.
This is a vast improvement over the Nano S, as it means I can store and manage almost all of my cryptocurrencies in one place.
I've had 30+ apps installed on my Nano X and noticed no lag in its speed or functionality.
It’s been extremely smooth, no matter how many apps I’ve had running on it.
I have always had a ton of space to install new apps and experiment with different cryptocurrencies or wallets.
This is a vast improvement over the original Nano S, which could store 3 to 6 apps (depending on the size of the apps) and would become slow and buggy when full.
The Ledger team has listened to their customers and created a device with enough storage space to satisfy most crypto enthusiasts.
Coin Support
At the time of writing, the Nano X supports over 1,800 coins and tokens.
This makes it a compelling option for anyone looking for a small mobile wallet that supports all their cryptocurrencies.
In my opinion, most users will be able to store all of their favorite cryptos on their Nano X without resorting to multiple wallets.
Buying, trading, and selling cryptos via Ledger Live is simple, easy, and intuitive.
Connectivity
My Nano X connects instantly to my iPhone via Bluetooth and makes buying, trading, and staking coins and tokens on Ledger Live extremely easy.
In my view, Bluetooth is an enormous leap forward in terms of user experience and makes the X much more user-friendly than the S.
Is the Nano X Safe?
I couldn’t write a Nano X review without addressing the elephant in the room: does Bluetooth connectivity make the Nano X unsafe?
This issue sharply divides crypto enthusiasts, with some users lambasting Ledger for including Bluetooth and others saying they prefer this feature.
So is Bluetooth a security liability?
At the time of writing, there have been zero verified hacks of the Ledger Nano X that have been directly attributed to Bluetooth connectivity.
The simple fact is that Bluetooth does not expose the wallet’s private keys even when the Nano X is “hot” (internet-connected).
It just doesn’t work that way. The Bluetooth helps your Nano receive the raw transaction, return the signed transaction, and then seek confirmations from the device.
This is no different from plugging your Nano X into a computer, as you are already broadcasting the same things to the open web.
At no point are your wallets’ private keys exposed, whether you use Bluetooth or not.
The benefit of having Bluetooth is that you aren’t anchored to a laptop or desktop whenever you want to buy, trade, or spend your cryptocurrency.
My Experience with the Ledger Nano X
As well as the Nano X, I also bought a Billfodl device, a solid steel case to store and protect your 24-word recovery phrase.

They only took a couple of days to arrive.
My initial impressions were very positive. The Nano and the Billfodl both feel solid and premium.
I like that the Nano X has a bigger screen and bigger buttons for navigation.
I followed the setup video and had the Nano X all set up in less than 10 minutes.
Here’s how it went:
- The first thing I did was install Ledger Live onto my PC.
- Next, I set up the Nano X by choosing a 4 to 8 digit passcode.
- After choosing a passcode, the Nano X gave me a 24-word recovery phrase that I wrote down and then put into my Billfodl device.
- You then need to confirm the recovery phrase to the device, and you’re all set.
After you’ve done this, you can go to Ledger Live and begin installing apps onto your device so you can store your crypto.
Ledger Live is the home hub where you can see your crypto and send, receive, and install apps.

If you want to send crypto from your Nano X, you will send it from Ledger Live and confirm the transaction on your Nano X device.
Receiving
Receiving crypto to the Nano X can be very easy too.
To get some Bitcoin onto the device, I installed the Bitcoin app from Ledger Live, then clicked “receive,” which gave me an address to send Bitcoin to.
I then sent some Bitcoin from an exchange to the address Ledger Live gave me.
After connecting the Nano X to my computer and accepting the request, the Bitcoin was on my device within minutes.
Should You Buy the Ledger Nano X?
If you care about keeping your crypto protected and secure, I recommend one.
After looking into other hardware wallets, none of them come close to being as secure as the Nano X.
So, if you’re buying crypto and want to keep it protected, buying a Nano X may be perfect for you.
Just remember to keep your 24-word recovery phrase hidden. Maybe even bury it in the garden or something.
Recently there’s been some exciting developments. You can now:
- Store your NFTs on your Nano X device
- Swap one crypto for another
- Stake crypto
And soon, they will be coming out with the Crypto Life debit card where you can spend your crypto anywhere that accepts VISA.
With the debit card, you can receive your paycheck in crypto and get access to loans by using your crypto as collateral.
The Ledger Nano X is super easy to use and a very secure way to take control of and store your crypto, which is why it’s now trusted by over 4 million customers worldwide.
Just be sure you buy from the official website to make sure you’re getting the real device, and not a fake.
